With work taking yet another big slice of my life, I have come to appreciate the importance of spending time offline with family and friends, and making room for my personal projects.
One weekend, a quick message to my former colleague turned trekking buddy (soon, maybe?) had the two of us exploring the nooks and crannies of Bukit Timah on a hazy, humid afternoon. We had an eye on FlagWhite and its neighbouring restaurant before deciding on the former for a filling, comfort brunch.
FlagWhite: An Aussie-Inspired Café with a Local Heart
FlagWhite, a locally-owned café inspired by Australian comfort food, was a short walk from Beauty World MRT Station. It was teeming with business every time I had passed by, and we got lucky with a couple of empty seats since we hadn’t made any reservations. As the café is also pet friendly, I’d recommend booking ahead if you’re set on a specific time slot.
The café operates on three principles: wholesome food, good coffee at honest pricing, and unlimited good vibes. Having sat through the weekend rush ourselves, I’d say they have delivered on every single one.

The Food: FlagWhite Beef Burger and Truffle Fries
The day started with my order of their flagship beef burger ($22) while my friend had their halibut burger ($22), both served with a side of fries. Mine arrived a stack that was far too ambitious for one person to finish alone.
The angus beef patty sat thick and juicy between the layers, served with egg, streaky bacon, cheddar, and onion; it was a savoury meal topped with the smokey barbeque aioli. The brioche bun, however, was my favourite: soft and faintly sweet, I’d actually finished it before the meat itself.
For the sides, I had added truffle shavings – giving a little more indulgence to the fries. With a glass of cold white coffee ($6) that was smooth and bittersweet, it was the perfect drink for the hot weather and to wash down the heavy meal. Overall, the brunch was satisfying and wholly indulgent.
The Verdict
The brunch was delish, although I’d recommend sharing the burger. I’d most likely be back to try their DIY brunch menu, where we can build our own plate from a list of mains and sides. There are also plenty more cafés and restaurants along the stretch of Bukit Timah, and I supposed an occasional treat or two could make the days better.
Speaking of which, perhaps it is indeed time to bring out my dusty pair of sports shoes and explore the trails yet again. While the Singapore Quarry was one unexpected trip, it seems there’s a lot more spots in Bukit Timah waiting to be discovered.
