Discover WELE Cherry Blossom Park: A Secret Hanami (花見) Spot

5 June 2023

Hanami (花見) means flower viewing in Japanese, with the literal meaning of hana (花) as ‘flower’ and mi (見) as ‘to see’. It is a traditional Japanese custom to have flower-viewing gatherings under the cherry blossom trees to contemplate and appreciate the transient beauty of these flowers.

While I have yet to experience the cherry blossom season in Japan, I have a chance encounter with these lovely flowers in WELE Cherry Blossom Park (中科崴立 櫻花公園) during my visit to Taichung.

Featuring different varieties of cherry blossom, WELE Cherry Blossom Park is a large garden dedicated to this flower. There is the Prunus campanulata Maxim (八重櫻) with layered petals, Prunus campanulata (山櫻花) with its darker pink petals, and Prunus incisa (富士櫻) the well-known Fuji cherry.

The cherry blossom season in Taiwan falls mainly on January and February for this year. I had, unfortunately, visited the park a little too late. Just in time for the final bloom in early March, I am filled with gratitude for this enchanting sight.

Located beside WELE Mechatronic company, WELE Cherry Blossom Park offers free entry to all visitors. Secure a flower-viewing spot here early, stroll along the canal, and take photographs within the arches early next year. Remember to dress warm too!

Address: No. 16, Jiujia Rd, Houli District, Taichung City, Taiwan 421
