In a quiet corner of Batam, Indonesia, I was introduced to a little slice of Kyoto by my family and I fell in love with the food and the place immediately.

As someone who’s always on the lookout for mindful dining spots that don’t compromise on flavour, Towzen Vegan was a wonderful find. With roots in Kyoto, Japan, this plant-based restaurant serves soulful Japanese cuisine inspired by ancient Buddhist cooking traditions (Shojin Ryori). But it’s not only the food that left an impression, it was the serenity that lingered long after the last sip of matcha.
Whether you’re vegan, health-conscious, or simply looking for a unique dining experience in Batam, Towzen deserves a spot on your must-visit list.
Atmosphere: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Batam
Towzen’s Batam outlet is located at Komp, away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. With warm wood tones, natural light, and minimalist Zen-inspired decor, the restaurant invites its diners to slow down and breathe.

The interior of the café is beautifully designed to reflect a sense of calm and mindfulness. Guests can choose between indoor and outdoor seating, both of which offer a tranquil atmosphere perfect for a slow, nourishing meal. Inside, the space is thoughtfully divided into two distinct styles: one with standard table seating, and another more traditional, tatami-style area where diners are invited to remove their shoes, adding to the authentic Japanese dining experience.
More Than Just Vegan: The Philosophy Behind Towzen
What sets Towzen apart from most vegan restaurants is its commitment to Shojin Ryori, the traditional Japanese Buddhist cuisine that emphasises simplicity, mindfulness, and respect for life. Since its founding in Kyoto in 2004, Towzen has remained fully vegan, and since 2018, it’s gone one step further by eliminating all allium vegetables like garlic, onion, and shallots.
Instead of having mock meats or processed alternatives, Towzen also crafts its flavours from whole foods: umami-rich mushrooms, soy and oat milk broths, fermented ingredients, and hand-prepared elements; serving clean, satisfying meals that nourish without overwhelming the palate.
My Meal: Yuzu Kosho Ramen & Sea Salt Uji Matcha Latte

The Yuzu Kosho Ramen has claimed its place in my heart. The base was an oat milk broth infused with yuzu kosho, a Japanese condiment made from salt, fermented chili, and yuzu citrus peel. It was a comforting bowl with a bright zing and gentle spice, filled with noodles that were springy and fresh, and toppings (tofu, capsicums, and black fungus) delicate yet flavourful.

The Premium Kyoto Uji Matcha Latte with Sea Salt rounded the meal perfectly. Made with Uji matcha from Kyoto, the latte was thick, earthy, and deeply satisfying. The subtle saltiness balanced the natural bitterness of the matcha and elevated the drink to something truly memorable.
Why Towzen Is Worth Visiting
- Fully Plant-Based: From ramen to rice sets and karaage, everything is 100% vegan and thoughtfully crafted.
- Global Acclaim: With outlets in Kyoto, Kuala Lumpur, Batam, and Sydney, Towzen’s philosophy travels but always stays rooted in Japan.
- Delicious, healthy, and affordable: I will simply return for the taste of their ramen.
Final Thoughts: A Nourishing Meal for the Mind & the Body
In a fast-paced world, meals like this are rare. There’s no rush, no noise, no excess. Just quiet, intentional cooking served with the heart.

If you’re ever in Batam, or planning a quick weekend getaway, put Towzen on your list. Whether you’re vegan, curious, or simply craving a mindful experience and a hearty meal, you’ll walk away fulfilled.
