There’s a first time for everything, and earlier this week, I embarked on my very first work trip. The destination? Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!
Slowly but surely, I’m ticking off my bucket list of iconic ASEAN cities to visit.
Though my schedule was packed tight, I managed to get a few moments to explore the city.
If you’re planning a visit, here’s a little glimpse of what makes Kuala Lumpur the charming capital of Malaysia.
When one thinks of Kuala Lumpur, it’s impossible not to mention the Petronas Twin Towers, the most prominent landmark in the city. I’ve seen countless photographs of them, but nothing compares to seeing this architectural marvel up close. With the sleek silver façade and the Skybridge connecting the two towers, they were every bit as magnificent as I’d imagined (and a little terrifying for the acrophobic in me!).
Fun fact: at 451.9 meters, the 88-storey twin structure was once the tallest buildings in the world! Standing at the base, craning my neck to take it all in, I couldn’t help but feel like an awestruck little kid.
A bit of history about the Petronas Twin Towers – officially opened in 1999, these skyscrapers were designed by the renowned Argentine architect César Pelli and symbolise Malaysia’s ambitions and aspirations.
One of the highlights is the Skybridge, the highest two-storey bridge in the world, suspended between the 41st and 42nd floors. It offers a stunning panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur’s skyline, perfect for those who aren’t afraid of heights. For the truly brave, the observation deck on the 86th floor promises an even more breathtaking view. While my tight schedule didn’t allow me the time to visit, the 360° virtual tour online was quite the teaser.
At the foot of the towers lies Suria KLCC, a six-storey shopping mall filled with luxury brands, trendy boutiques, and a variety of dining options. After a quick round of shopping for necessities, we made our way to the KLCC Park nearby. The view of the Twin Towers from the park was nothing short of magical, picture-perfect against the night sky.
Sadly, time wasn’t on my side. Between meetings and tight schedules, I couldn’t explore as much as I wanted to. No street food adventures, no cultural strolls, just a quick snapshot of the Twin Towers before I was whisked away again. But this fleeting taste of Kuala Lumpur has left me more than satisfied for this trip.
