Sicao Green Tunnel: The Little Amazon of Tainan

15 March 2024

Enter an enchanting realm in Sicao Green Tunnel (四草綠隧) located in the Annan District of Tainan, Taiwan.

A famous tourist spot, the Sicao Green Tunnel refers to the water channel behind Sicao Dazhong Temple (四草大眾廟). Visitors can enjoy a thirty-minute raft ride through the canal with a tour guide explaining the local ecological habitat.

Feel the warmth of dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves and keep your eyes out for herons, egrets, and mudskippers.

And as we delve deeper into the ride, remember to watch your head as the foliage grows thicker!

Glimpse the former site of Fort Zeeburg, which was built by the Dutch back in the 1600s.

While the seating arrangement was on a first-come-first-serve basis, the driver would turn the boat sideways to ensure everyone could get an unobstructed picture of Sicao Green Tunnel.

Witness the magical sight of the mangrove forests paving the way for the flowing canal, their leaves coming together to form a green dome with seemingly no end in sight.

As we visited Sicao during peak season, we had to wait approximately two hours to get on the raft ride. Do note your schedule as the waiting time can get quite long either way — on off-peak days, the raft will only operate once the capacity is full.

My take? Yes, it’s worth a visit!
