Meet the Peacocks in Shou Shan Zoo, Kaohsiung Taiwan

15 July 2023

Welcome to Shou Shan Zoo (壽山動物園) in Gushan district, Kaohsiung City. The biggest zoo in Southern Taiwan, it is name after the Shou mountain (壽山) where the zoo is located.

White Tiger

From local breeds to animals from different parts of the world, Shou Shan Zoo boasts a variety of animals in safe and expansive spaces. The zoo also actively participate in conservation projects to encourage the preservation of wildlife.

After a US$18M and two-year renovation, the zoo has improved ventilation and an elevated walkway for greater accessibility.

Formosan Black Bear

The zoo has different sections: Aquatic Animals, Parrots Paradise, Tigers (Bengal and White), and Friendly Animal Area including the Hut of Capybara.

There is also the Formosan Animal Area where the Formosan Black Bear can be found, the open-area Bird Enclosure, and the Sika Deers Enclosure.

Falabella Miniature Horse

Keep an eye out for the beautiful Falabella Miniature Horses with their long and silky mane and the large Taiwanese Yellow Cattle. There’s also a big hutch dedicated to the capybaras —  the largest rodent species in the world!

Capybara

For me, the main attraction was the open-air bird enclosure. It’s a large garden where birds roam freely and peacocks strut about in proximity. It had seemed like it was the mating season for the peacocks and peahens hence we were able to catch most of them with their beautiful feathers out on display.

Watch the above video for a peacock’s twirl.

Turn on the volume for the following video and listen to the peacock’s calls:

Do take note that there are wild monkeys roaming about, so keep your belongings safe!

Directions:

  • Take Kaohsiung City Bus No. 56 from Yanchengpu MRT Station to Wanshoushan Bridge stop.
  • Each adult ticket costs NTD40 while the tram ride costs NTD50.

Last but not least, leave nothing and take only memories (photographs & souvenirs). Turn off your flash for phototaking, and stay safe and hydrated!
